This image represents the moment of the discovery of the Virgin of Charity: “It was the 17th century when three men, known as ‘the three Juans’, found an image floating in the sea. These men were Juan Moreno, an African slave, and two indigenous brothers, Juan and Rodrigo de Hoyos. According to tradition, the image remained intact despite the waves and bore an inscription that read: ‘I am the Virgin of Charity’.” This miraculous discovery quickly became an object of veneration among the inhabitants of the region. The Virgin was taken to the mining town of El Cobre, where a small sanctuary was built for her, which today is a basilica. Over time, her devotion spread throughout the island, becoming a symbol of hope and unity for Cubans.
