The story takes place on board a ship bound for Europe. A young man on the verge of becoming a priest, shares a cabin with a psychoanalyst. The incidents of the book take place amid the events created by the doctor who induces the young man to take a test before his final vows. The test, the result of which would be of utmost importance to his future life, consists of meeting a young girl on board thereby producing the impasse of love versus his priestly vocation. The daily events on the ship, the search for the girl and the romance that follows will complete, together with the scenes of tourism in European ports, a string of suggestive episodes that will grip the reader from the very first pages.

The dialogue between the young seminarian and the psychoanalyst is surprisingly deep and thought-provoking. I was pulled into their conversations right from the first chapter.

Hazel ★★★★★

The unlikely pairing of a seminarian and a psychoanalyst in one cramped cabin made for a richer dialogue than I expected, and the pacing kept me turning pages through the whole voyage. It's a thought-provoking read that doesn't feel preachy even with the priest-in-training at the center.

Leo ★★★★★

The story's unique setup with a priest-to-be and a psychoanalyst sharing a cabin on a transatlantic voyage immediately drew me in. I finished reading it in two sittings—those philosophical clashes over dinner scenes felt remarkably real. A truly thoughtful purchase for anyone who enjoys character-dr
